Ideal Day
by Laura Boss

My ideal day would be sitting at home
with a new Philip Roth novel
(probably impossible since he died
last year and gave up writing novels
several years before that)

My ideal day would be the phone ringing
and my younger son saying
he had finally gotten a job in his field
the travel industry( though like the.
typewriter repair business, the travel
agent is on the job endangered list )

My ideal day would be the mail arriving with
a letter from my doctor saying all
my lab work was now normal

My ideal day would be having a number of
Kit Kat bars next to me as I read

My ideal day would be my grandchildren’s mother saying
that since my son has a good job, she is thinking of
going back to him( maybe the most impossible thing
on my list)

My ideal day would be complete silence from our president— no tweeters
or instagrams, no press releases
as he sits in the Oval Office
watching game shows

My ideal day would be news reports without
one incident of racial violence ,
prejudice against immigrants ,gun violence,
bombings or children starving in Yemen,
Syria, or our own country

But my ideal day is as impossible and as elusive for me
as Philip Roth coming back from the dead
and sitting down at his computer and typing out a new novel.
